Charles Melton Reportedly Ghosted The 2028 MCU X-Men Reboot Movie, And Beast Is Apparently Single Again

Just days before Marvel was supposedly ready to parade its entire mutant roster in front of thousands of screaming fans at D23, the internet decided to throw a wrench into the works shaped exactly like Charles Melton.

According to a wave of new reports, the actor long rumored to play Hank McCoy — better known by his fur coat and PhD, Beast — has reportedly turned down the role in the MCU X-Men Reboot Movie, and Marvel’s carefully choreographed casting reveal may now be missing a very important blue piece.

So What Actually Happened?

The rumor mill kicked into overdrive when insider Daniel Richtman’s intel started circulating that Melton — known for Riverdale and May December — had decided against playing Hank McCoy after all, as reported by ComicBookMovie.com.

Richtman himself later clarified the information concerning Melton turning down a part in the wasn’t “100%” confirmed, though the damage — and the panic — was already done.

Neither Melton nor rumored Jean Grey alternate Sydney Sweeney-adjacent castmate (more on that mess elsewhere) is technically locked in stone, but the timing could not be worse for a studio that was reportedly banking on a full ensemble reveal.

Social media amplified things fast, with a viral Threads post flatly declaring that Melton had “dropped out” of the MCU X-Men Reboot Movie and that the full cast announcement expected at D23 was now “in danger of not happening,” according to a widely shared Threads post.

On X, accounts like Cosmic Marvel and ScoopsRus_ piled on with similar claims, with one post specifically noting Marvel now has until Friday — the start of D23 — to either talk Melton back into the fold or scramble for a replacement.

ComicBook.com laid out the stakes clearly, noting that if the reports hold up, it throws a wrench into what fans hoped would be Disney’s big moment to finally unveil its live-action mutant team beyond the fleeting cameos we’ve gotten so far, as detailed in their casting update coverage.

And Murphy’s Multiverse chimed in too, pointing out that despite the pairing being well-received by fans for nearly two months, it now looks like Melton might not be walking through Marvel’s doors after all, per their own report.

Wait, Wasn’t Melton Basically Confirmed Already?

Sort of! This is the part that makes the whole saga extra chaotic. Just weeks ago, Melton was doing press for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Her Private Hell and got asked point-blank about the Beast rumors by The Playlist. Instead of denying anything, he reportedly just smiled and shot back, “Wow. Who’s directing?” — a response so coyly loaded it practically confirmed the casting on its own, according to Murphy’s Multiverse.

The wink was extra pointed because Jake Schreier, the director steering the MCU X-Men Reboot Movie, previously worked with Melton on Season 2 of Netflix’s Beef, alongside Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and writer-producer Joanna Calo, who are also reportedly on the new film’s creative team.

Before that, VGTimes reported that insider Jeff Sneider had said Marvel was still auditioning multiple actors for Hank McCoy, with Melton among the frontrunners alongside Peter Claffey, and with Logan Lerman and Jesse Plemons previously linked to the role earlier in the process, according to their casting roundup.

So technically, nothing was ever officially locked — but “technically nothing was confirmed” hasn’t stopped a single superhero casting rumor from becoming gospel in the group chat, and it certainly didn’t stop anyone’s hopes for the MCU X-Men Reboot Movie from getting sky-high.

Why This Is Happening Right Before D23

Here’s the deliciously bad timing: D23 runs August 14 through 16, and per ComicBook.com’s reporting, industry chatter had pointed to this being the moment Marvel would finally reveal its full live-action X-Men roster — the real deal, not another blink-and-you-miss-it multiverse cameo like Kelsey Grammer’s Beast in The Marvels or Patrick Stewart’s Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Sadie Sink has already been confirmed as Jean Grey via Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Samara Weaving has been announced as Emma Frost, and rumors continue to swirl around Kit Connor as Cyclops and Jayme Lawson as Storm. Losing your rumored Beast four days before the big reveal is the casting equivalent of your best man losing the wedding rings on the morning of the ceremony.

Murphy’s Multiverse points out Marvel isn’t without options: even a partial reveal — paired with finally confirming which mystery villain Adam Driver is actually playing — would still be a massive moment for the MCU X-Men Reboot Movie, Melton or no Melton.

What Nicholas Hoult Thinks (Because Of Course We Asked)

In an amusing side plot, former big-screen Beast Nicholas Hoult recently told Entertainment Weekly he has had zero talks with Marvel about reprising the role, despite watching his X-Men co-stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn all get folded into Avengers: Doomsday, as covered by AOL/Entertainment Weekly. So even the last guy to play Beast on the big screen is watching this unfold from the sidelines, popcorn in paw.

The Bottom Line

Nothing here is confirmed by Marvel Studios itself — no trade has independently verified it, and even the original leaker admitted the information wasn’t fully locked.

But between the viral social posts, the multiple outlets independently reporting the same rumor, and the extremely inconvenient timing four days before D23, the idea that Melton has walked away from the MCU X-Men Reboot Movie has gone from fringe theory to the industry’s leading storyline in under 24 hours.

Whether Marvel talks him back, finds a replacement, or just quietly reshuffles the D23 slide deck, one thing’s certain: nobody saw this particular mutant plot twist coming, and the internet has never been happier about a maybe.
