Welcome to Remain, the film that asked “what if Nicholas Sparks and M. Night Shyamalan had to share custody of a screenplay,” and then actually built the thing.
Wait, Sparks AND Shyamalan? Together? In the Same Movie?
Yes. Somehow. Remain is the product of a genuinely strange-on-paper, brilliant-in-practice collaboration: Shyamalan writes, directs, and produces from a story he cooked up with Nicholas Sparks — the reigning king of tear-jerking, ocean-adjacent romance — who also published his own version as a novel.
According to Variety, the pairing is exactly as tonally whiplash-inducing as it sounds, with the outlet describing the footage as a couple caught in “an unsettling relationship” dressed up in golden-hour lighting. It’s essentially The Notebook if the notebook were possessed.
And per Brit.co, this pairing is less random than it looks — Shyamalan was reportedly once offered the chance to direct the actual Sparks classic The Notebook and turned it down to go make The Sixth Sense instead. Two decades later, he’s circled back to finish the emotional unfinished business, except now everybody sees dead people again, presumably.

ScreenRant walks through the trailer’s opening beats in loving detail: Tate shows up at Wren’s place with a charades-style board game called Body Language, and the two spend a blissful few minutes play-acting clues and falling for each other, because nothing says “healthy romantic setup” like a movie whose entire marketing strategy hinges on you not trusting it. The Hollywood Reporter even flags the trailer’s big swoony line, with Gyllenhaal’s Tate telling Wren, “You’re not like anybody I’ve ever met.” Sir. In an M. Night Shyamalan movie. Alongside Gyllenhaal and Dynevor, the Remain teaser trailer rollout confirms a supporting cast that includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Originally eyed for a Halloween 2026 release, Remain has since been moved, and multiple outlets — including Variety, Screen Rant, and The Arts Shelf — confirm the new date is Valentine’s Day, February 5, 2027, in North America, with international audiences (including the UK and Ireland) getting it a couple of days earlier, on February 3. Nothing says “romantic evening out” quite like a movie that may or may not end with your date disappearing from a bathroom.
