The Heartland Trailer Just Dropped, and Jessica Chastain Is Not Here to Make Friends

The Heartland trailer landed on Netflix’s YouTube channel this week, and within hours it had done what every great trailer should: made a whole lot of people say “wait, is Jessica Chastain… a cowboy now?” Short answer: sort of, but with a gun, a grudge, and a genuinely unsettling amount of eyeliner. Long answer: let’s break the whole thing down.

Wait, Which “Heartland” Are We Talking About?

Before anyone goes digging through old episodes of the CBC ranch drama about the Fleming-Bartlett family and their horses — that’s a different, much gentler Heartland, and it’s been trotting along for nineteen seasons.

This Heartland trailer is for something entirely different: a brand-new Netflix film written and directed by Shana Feste, the filmmaker behind Country Strong, The Greatest, and Run Sweetheart Run.

Think less “horse whispering in Alberta” and more “Nashville noir with a body count.” Netflix released the official trailer and key art for Heartland, an upcoming mystery thriller starring Jessica Chastain, Garrett Hedlund, Carter Faith, Ross Lynch, Paul Sparks, Jennifer Nettles, and John Hawkes, with the film’s title track also released online.

If the horse-ranch Heartland is comfort food, this new Heartland trailer is a shot of whiskey with something bitter at the bottom of the glass.

So What Actually Happens in the Trailer?

Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Heartland, a dark country-western mystery starring Oscar winner Jessica Chastain as a former country music legend pulled back into the spotlight after two decades away.

Chastain plays Misty Jones, a onetime country superstar who’s spent twenty years as a recluse, presumably perfecting the art of the withering stare.

The official trailer reveals a tense murder investigation centered around Misty Jones, a former country star who returns to Nashville after 20 years to find her missing 22-year-old niece and famous singer, Charlie Heart.

What starts as a missing-person case escalates fast. The disappearance of Charlie Heart shifts from a missing person search into an official murder investigation — and that’s when the Heartland trailer stops feeling like a music-industry drama and starts feeling like someone slipped a Taylor Sheridan script into the Grand Ole Opry’s mailbox.

One outlet went so far as to call it “Taylor Sheridan Meets Taken”, which, honestly, tracks — Chastain’s character vows to tear Nashville’s underbelly apart after declaring that once someone’s gone missing, the clock starts ticking, hinting at a much darker conspiracy lurking beneath the case.

Meet the Cast (Everyone Showed Up)

The Heartland trailer isn’t skimping on star power. Alongside Chastain, the ensemble includes Garrett Hedlund as Misty’s manager Roy Combs, Jennifer Nettles as fellow country singer Winnie Jo Lean, and Ross Lynch as Charlie’s boyfriend Jace.

The cast also includes Hill Harper, Norbert Leo Butz, Wynn Everett, Isabelle Kusman, and David Rysdahl, giving the whole thing the energy of a packed green room at a very tense awards show.

The Music Is Basically a Second Trailer

Here’s the detail that makes this Heartland trailer feel bigger than your average streaming thriller: there’s an entire album attached. The Heartland soundtrack features original performances from the film’s cast, including Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Nettles, Ross Lynch and Carter Faith, alongside Margo Price, Carly Pearce, Eddy Dunlap, Channing Wilson and Dave “Fergie” Ferguson, and the album sets country music’s mistakes, temptations and betrayals to song, led by the title track performed by Chastain and Nettles.

Even the trailer’s score got in on the bit — the preview features an atmospheric cover of Hailey Whitters’ song “Heartland,” serving as an ominous anthem for the thriller. So yes, the Heartland trailer has its own needle drop, its own soundtrack, and presumably its own Spotify playlist waiting to make you cry in your car.

Jessica Chastain, On Playing a Woman Who Is Deeply, Wonderfully Not Nice

The Heartland trailer sells intrigue, but Chastain’s own description of Misty Jones is the real selling point. “Misty could be incredibly tender, and then five minutes later, shoot someone’s windows out,” Chastain explained, adding that Misty isn’t interested in being liked, and that she loves playing women like that because audiences don’t get to see them often — underneath the noir and mystery, the film is about women reclaiming authorship of their own lives. Somewhere, a group of long-suffering Nashville ex-husbands are quietly updating their life insurance.

Director Shana Feste, for her part, is leaning into familiar turf with a twist. Feste wanted to depict Nashville “through a film-noir lens while exploring a seedier side of the city,” placing a complicated, deeply flawed woman at the center of it.

Which, given that her last Nashville-set movie was the significantly sunnier Country Strong, suggests the Heartland trailer represents a genuine tonal left turn — less “redemption ballad,” more “someone’s definitely getting shot in a parking lot.”

When You Can Actually Watch the Thing

The wait, mercifully, is short. Heartland premieres on Netflix on November 13, 2026, which gives everyone just enough time to rewatch the Heartland trailer approximately forty more times and develop at least three competing fan theories about who did it.

What the Press Is Saying

The Heartland trailer has already made the rounds, and the coverage has been having fun with it. People dove into Chastain’s quotes about playing a “complicated, deeply flawed woman.” UPI framed it as “music, murder” colliding in Nashville.

MovieWeb went for the “Taylor Sheridan Meets Taken” comparison that’s since been quoted everywhere. Whiskey Riff — never ones to undersell a country-music crossover — called it “Yellowstone meets Nashville.”

Vital Thrills rounded up the full cast and soundtrack credits, First Showing leaned into the “country western” angle, Backstage Country and Social News XYZ both dug into the mystery setup, and Keith Loves Movies laid out the full cast and crew list in granular detail. Even Wikipedia’s page for the upcoming film has already been updated, which is basically the internet’s version of a stamp of legitimacy.

The Verdict

Is the Heartland trailer going to make you forget there’s already a beloved horse show with the same name? Probably not entirely — somebody, somewhere, is going to click play expecting Amy Fleming and get Jessica Chastain instead, and honestly, that person is in for a wild Tuesday night.

But as a piece of marketing, the Heartland trailer does exactly what it needs to: it sells star power, atmosphere, a genuinely intriguing mystery, and a soundtrack people will be humming before the movie even premieres.

Mark your calendars for November 13 — Misty Jones is coming home, and Nashville should probably be worried.
