Hexed Trailer Breakdown: Disney Just Dropped a Witch, a 3-Eyed Cat, and a Whole Lot of Family Drama

Hexed Trailer Breakdown: Disney Just Dropped a Witch, a 3-Eyed Cat, and a Whole Lot of Family Drama

The Hexed trailer is finally here, and Walt Disney Animation Studios would like you to know that it has absolutely nothing to do with a certain boy wizard in round glasses — even though the internet is already drawing comparisons faster than Billie can accidentally set off a magical mishap.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has released its newest footage for Hexed, an original animated coming-of-age fantasy that drops a suburban teenager into a secret realm of witches, three-eyed cats, and apparently one very petty queen.

So What Actually Happens in the Hexed Trailer?

The Hexed trailer introduces us to Billie Doe, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, a teenage girl who discovers secret magical abilities and gets expelled after a magical mishap at school.

From there, things escalate in the most Disney way possible: Billie’s powers hurtle her out of suburbia and into a sprawling witch realm called Hexe, where the vibe shifts from “awkward teen drama” to “full-blown fantasy spectacle” in about four seconds flat.

Here’s the twist that the Hexed trailer leans into hard: Mom already knew. Billie’s mother, Alice, voiced by Rashida Jones, was aware of her daughter’s magical abilities and had been trying to hide them ever since Billie first manifested powers as a baby.

Once the cat’s out of the bag — or in this case, the three-eyed cat is very much in the bag — mother and daughter are forced to team up and uncover family mysteries that could change the entire world of witches forever. Nothing like a shared magical destiny to spice up a mother-daughter road trip.

Also, because this is a Disney trailer and someone in marketing clearly has a sense of humor, a voiceover warns that it was foretold an ordinary girl would become an extraordinary witch and save the world of magic from evil. Subtle, Disney. Real subtle.

The Cast of the Hexed Trailer Is Genuinely Unhinged (Complimentary)

If you thought the Hexed trailer was just going to coast on Hailee Steinfeld and Rashida Jones, buckle up, because the voice cast reads like someone built a fantasy draft board and then just… kept drafting.

  • Hailee Steinfeld as Billie Doe, our reluctant chosen one.
  • Rashida Jones as Alice, the mom with secrets and surprisingly good instincts about running from magical law enforcement.
  • Jodie Foster as Queen Celeste — a sinister ruler who will do anything to hold onto her power in Hexe, and notably, this marks the first time the two-time Academy Award winner has ever done voice acting. Truly a flex for a Disney villain to pull Clarice Starling out of retirement for her screen debut.
  • Walton Goggins as Beef Roger Crummchuk, a reclusive, magical three-eyed cat who forms an uneasy alliance with Billie and Alice. Yes, that’s really the character’s name. No, we are not going to stop saying it.
  • Tracey Ullman as Ms. Quill and Stephen Fry as Elias Quire, rounding out the “distinguished British talent lending gravitas to a cartoon” department.
  • Henry Winkler as Nigel, a nervous but all-knowing potoo bird carrying powerful secrets about Hexe — proof that even in a magical kingdom, nobody wants to be the one who has to deliver the exposition.
  • Dan Stevens as Hieronymous, a blustering and pompous Grand Councilor to Queen Celeste, which feels like a natural career pivot for the man who already knows a thing or two about being cursed, having played the Beast.

The Hexed trailer rollout also confirmed a supporting cast stacked with Brett Gelman, Samson Kayo, Rachel Dratch, Ariana Madix, Kathy Najimy, Randall Park, Yvette Nicole Brown, Abraham Benrubi, and Josh Dallas — plus, in a genuinely wild bit of casting, former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre and former ESPN broadcaster Pat McAfee. Somewhere, a Disney casting director is very proud of this spreadsheet.

Who’s Behind the Magic Curtain

The Hexed trailer comes from directors Fawn Veerasunthorn and Jason Hand, with Josie Trinidad co-directing, and the film is written by Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush, alongside Dana Ledoux Miller.

Producers Roy Conli and Yvett Merino bring serious pedigree to the project — Conli previously worked on Tangled and Big Hero 6, while Merino produced Encanto.

Director Veerasunthorn explained the emotional engine behind the film in a statement, saying that something strange is happening to Billie that she can’t explain, and that Billie has spent her life feeling miscast in her own existence, needing to step into Hexe’s wild magic to finally understand herself.

It’s a relatable sentiment dressed up in broomsticks and spellcraft — basically every coming-of-age story ever, just with better production design.

Why Everyone’s Buzzing About the Hexed Trailer

Critics and entertainment outlets have wasted no time piling on the comparisons. One outlet flatly noted the Hexed trailer gives off vibes similar to both Harry Potter and Doctor Strange, while another joked outright that Disney seems to be offering its own spin on the “ordinary kid discovers they’re secretly magical” formula. Fair, but also: this genre exists because it works every single time, and nobody is mad about it.

Musically, the Hexed trailer isn’t messing around either — it features a cinematic rendition of Paramore’s “Ain’t It Fun”, which is either an extremely on-the-nose needle drop or an extremely perfect one, depending on how recently you’ve been forced to learn a hard lesson about consequences.

The Important Logistics Part

Hexed marks Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 65th animated feature, and it’s set to open exclusively in theaters on November 25, 2026 — conveniently timed to catch families searching for something to do the day before Thanksgiving leftovers take over everyone’s personality.

Given the scale of the Hexed trailer‘s cast reveal and the sheer density of “wait, THAT person is in this too?” moments, Disney is clearly betting big on word-of-mouth heading into the holiday season.

The Verdict (So Far)

Judging by the reaction across entertainment media, the Hexed trailer has done exactly what a good trailer should: made a brand-new world feel instantly familiar while still leaving plenty of mystery about where the family secrets, the villainous queen, and that extremely judgmental three-eyed cat are ultimately headed.

Is it trying to scratch the same itch as other “hidden magical world” franchises? Sure. But with this voice cast, this crew, and a potoo bird named Nigel who apparently knows too much, Hexed looks like it has more than enough personality to cast its own spell.
